In this economy it’s hard to plan a marketing budget. It’s as if you’ve be given a exam but you weren’t allowed to study for the exam, and the smart students taking the exam are dropping like teenage girls at a Justin Timberlake concert.

A logo is a signature, flag or a sign post that identifies a company or product. Most clients want their company logo to explain what their company is about. Of course they do, because most clients aren’t sure what a good logo is supposed to achieve.
Suppose instead of calling my friend’s name I decide to explain who he is. Well by the time I start to explain who he is, people would have forgotten who I am talking about. Why go through the trouble of making it complicated. Make it simple call him by his name or his title.

Here is what a logo does;(taking for the book Designing Identity by Marc English)
A logo is a flag, a signature, an escutcheon.
A logo doesn’t sell (directly), it identifies.
A logo is rarely a description of a business.
A logo derives its meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around.
A logo is less important the the product it signifies; what it means is more important the what it looks like.

The simpler the better. A logo is an easy, memorable, unique and enduring way to identify a company or product.

How’s your end of year promotional and marketing materials coming along. Here is something to consider. One of our recent projects is to build a online game. Our new client(partner)is a one woman operation. Our first challenge was that our client did not have a tax id number and the company had not been incorporated. We had two options, one(1) start creating the game without the company being formed or two(2) help our client to form and incorporate her company. We choose option two(2) and with the help of Shawn William CPA we were able to setup up her company. Option two(2) would give our client/partner better legal protection and help both us and the client to create a strategic plan of action that would position her company above her competition. Option two(2) set the web development project back 2 weeks but this was a necessary step. Graphic design is only one ingredient to a successful business. Instead of being artist we are strategic business savvy partners.

No Not really, I just joined twitter. It’s not just for the birds. It’s pretty cool.

Tara: Freelance Designer
I have written before why I think a logo design is worth investing a little time and money on, but a friend told me something a little while ago that shed a whole new light on cheap logo design.

My friend another freelance designer had recently started working with a new client who unfortunately had already had their logo design done by a cheap logo designer. He had now approached my friend to help with some design work after the problems they had had with the cheap logo. They had basically commissioned someone to do a really cheap logo, they were happy with the design and so had it printed on they stationery, literature and vans. The problem began when they found another local company in the same line of work had a very similar logo. I don’t know whether both logos were done by the same designer, or perhaps two different designers used some logo clip art, or the designer copied the other logo, but either way it was an expensive mistake. The cost of van graphics, literature and stationery could easily outweigh the costs of using a reputable graphic designer who charges realistic prices because they spend time thinking about and designing a logo and not just using clip art or copying designs.

Its a pretty embarrassing thing to be driving a van which looks very similar to your competitor too.”
