What is a good logo?

A logo is a signature, flag or a sign post that identifies a company or product. Most clients want their company logo to explain what their company is about. Of course they do, because most clients aren’t sure what a good logo is supposed to achieve.
Suppose instead of calling my friend’s name I decide to explain who he is. Well by the time I start to explain who he is, people would have forgotten who I am talking about. Why go through the trouble of making it complicated. Make it simple call him by his name or his title.

Here is what a logo does;(taking for the book Designing Identity by Marc English)
A logo is a flag, a signature, an escutcheon.
A logo doesn’t sell (directly), it identifies.
A logo is rarely a description of a business.
A logo derives its meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolizes, not the other way around.
A logo is less important the the product it signifies; what it means is more important the what it looks like.

The simpler the better. A logo is an easy, memorable, unique and enduring way to identify a company or product.
